The Bhumiputra (Bhoomiputra) is a respected term used for the Koli caste of Maharashtra because Kolis are the original inhabitants of the Mumbai city and the Mumbai islands. The Mumbai city is named after the Koli goddess Mumba Aai (Mumba Dev, Mumba Mata) which is the family deity of the Koli caste of Mumbai and the Coastal regions of Maharashtra.
In 2024, the Eknath Shinde (Chief Minister of Maharashtra state of India) called and addressed the Koli caste as Daryacha Raja and the Bhumiputra because Kolis are oldest inhabitants of Mumbai.
