The Kolis were most prominent community in Maratha Empire and there are many Kolis who served in Maratha army and Maratha navy of Maratha Empire. Here are details on notable Kolis from Maratha Empire:
- Koli Subedar Tanaji Malusare: Tanaji was Subedar in Maratha army and fought several battles including Battle of Jawali, Capture of Torna Fort, Battle of Pratapgad and Battle of Sinhagad. In the battle of Sinhagad, Koli Subedar Tanaji Malusare was killed by Mughal Subedar Udaybhan Rathod Rajput. Koli Subedar Tanaji Malusare also was known as Maratha because he was serving in Maratha Empire but he was Mahadev Koli by caste.
- Koli Subedar Kondaji Ramji Shelar (Shelar Mama): Shelar Mama was subedar in Maratha army and in 1670, He killed the Mughal Subedar Udaybhan Rathod Rajput in the Battle of Sinhagad and captured the Sinhagad fort. He was Mahadev Koli by caste but known as Maratha because he was serving in Maratha Empire.
- Suryaji Malusare: Suryaji Malusare Koli was Deputy Subedar in Maratha army and fought the battle of Sinhagad and captured the Purandar fort. He was younger brother Tanaji Malusare.
- Koli Subedar Raybhaji Malusare: Raybhaji was son of Koli Subedar Tanaji Malusare. Raybhaji Malusare was Subedar of Pargad fort and commanded Pargad fort for 60 years.
- Javji Bamble: Javji Bamble was Koli by caste and he was Mansabdar of Junnar Subah under Maratha Empire. In 1760, Koli Mansabdar Javji Bamble rebelled against Peshwa and captured the Lohagad fort, Bhairogarh fort, Shidgarh fort, Kotah fort, Ratangarh fort, Alang fort and Madangarh fort from Peshwa and defeated the Maratha army several times.
- Koli Sarnaik Kondaji Chivhe: Kondaji Chivhe was Sarnaik in Maratha Army and Mahadev Koli by caste. In 1764, Koli Sarnaik Kondaji Chivhe rebelled against Peshwa Raghunathrao and captured the Purandar fort and Rudramal fort from Peshwa. Kondaji Chivhe defeated the Maratha army four times and imprisoned the Peshwa Raghunathrao in Purandar fort for one week.
- Koli Darya-Sarang Kanhoji Angre: Kanhoji Angre was Son Koli by caste and Grand Admiral of Maratha Navy of Maratha Empire. He didn't lost in battles untill his death. He was also known as Maratha because he was serving in Maratha Empire.
- Laya Patil: Laya Patil was Fleet Chief in Maratha Navy and he sieged the Janjira island. Laya Patil was Son Koli by caste and he was honoured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj because of his courage on Janjira siege.
Recent example: Marathas of Maharashtra protested and agitated against Maharashtra government to get Other Backward Class reservation but government denied their demand and asked to show their original caste Taampatra so some of the Marathas showed their Taampatras of Kunbi caste and other castes.
