Mumba Devi

The Mumba Devi is a Hindu goddess in Maharashtra. Mumba Devi is a family deity of Koli caste in Maharashtra. She is worshipped by Koli fishermen.
The ancient original Mumba Devi temple was built by Kolis of Mumbai at Bori Bunder because Mumba Devi is a Koli goddess but in 1737 British East India Company government destroyed the original Mumba Devi temple to develop the fort area thereafter there after rebellion by Koli community to save the Mumba Devi temple. After that EIC suggested the Bhuleshwar to Koli people rebuilt the Mumba Devi temple. The Mumba Devi temple was rebuilt by Kolis with the help of local merchants at Bhuleshwar in the end of 1737.
The Mumbai city is named after Koli goddess Mumba Devi. Mumbai means Mumba Aai, Aai means Mother in Marathi language and Kolis of Maharashtra calls their Aai (Mother) to Mumba devi.
