Koli Nayak | Nayak Koli | Nayak (title)

The Nayak (Naik) is a military title of Koli caste mostly found in Indian state of Maharashtra and Union Territory Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
The Kolis of Maharashtra who were military leaders in Maratha Empire and Deccan Sultanates used the title of Nayak. Kolis who was village Headman and chief of tribe or clan (Gotra) also used the Nayak title.
In 1770, Koli Nayak Javji Bamble defeated the Marathas several times and captured the Lohagad fort, Alang fort, Ratangarh fort, Madangarh fort, Bhairogarh fort, Sidhgarh fort and Kotah forts from Marathas.
The Jayabha Popere was Koli Nayak of Mukne fort (Mud fort) but In 1306, Koli Nayak Jaybha Popere captured the Jawhar kingdom from its rulers with the help of Kolis of Gujarat and then Jayabha Popere started the use Mukne as thier Mukne dynasty and known as Jayabha Mukne.
In 1798, Koli Nayak Ramji Bhangre of Deogaon in Maratha Empire fought against Peshwa but Peshwa was not able to capture the Koli Nayak Ramji Bhangre so Peshwa offered the post of Patil to Koli Nayak.

In 1763, Koli Nayaks of Chivhe clan (Gotra) of Kolis under Koli Nayak Kondaji Chivhe defeated the Maratha army several times and captured the Sinhagad fort and Purandar fort from Maratha Prime Minister Peshwa Raghunathrao. In 1764, Koli Nayak Kondaji Chivhe again defeated the Maratha army and captured the Rudramal fort from Peshwa. After some days, Peshwa Raghunathrao came to Purandar fort with high security to worship his clan deity but once again Peshwa and his officers and general were captured and Peshwa was imprisoned by Kondaji Chivhe but after one week, Koli Nayak Kondaji Chivhe released him. After his release, Peshwa again commanded the Maratha army but Marathas again defeated by Koli Nayaks.

In 1790, Koli Kuroji Naik captured the Purandar fort from British forces and than offered it to Marathas.
