The Himachal Pradesh has only four Lok Sabha seats, one of which is the Shimla Lok Sabha constituency. The Shimla Lok Sabha seat has consistently been won by candidates from the Koli community. The Koli community constitutes the largest population group in the Shimla Lok Sabha constituency. However, considering Himachal Pradesh as a whole, the Rajput community is the largest, making up 30% of the population, followed by the Koli community. The Koli community comprises 10% of Himachal Pradesh's total population and only candidates from the Koli community have won the Shimla Lok Sabha seat. The first Koli Member of Parliament from the Shimla Lok Sabha seat was Pratap Singh. Pratap Singh won the election from Shimla for the first time in 1967 and then again in 1971. Pratap Singh contested the election twice and won both times. Pratap Singh was a Junior Commissioned Officer in the British Indian Army and the National President of the All India Kshatriya Koli Mahasabha. By the time he retired from the army, Pratap Singh had been awarded five army medals. Pratap Singh was born on December 27, 1912, in Nahan village of the Sirmaur princely state, to Shivram Singh Koli who was a farmer. Pratap Singh died in Port Blair, Daman and Diu, at the age of 62. After Pratap Singh, another Koli, Balakram Kashyap, became a Member of Parliament.
The second Koli Member of Parliament from the Shimla Lok Sabha seat was Balakram Kashyap. Balakram Kashyap won the election from the Shimla Lok Sabha seat in 1977, becoming the second Koli Member of Parliament. Later, in 1982, Balakram Kashyap contested and won the assembly election from the Kusumpti constituency. Balakram Kashyap was a leader of the Janata Party. Balakram Kashyap was also an officer in the British Indian Army and at the time of his retirement, he was a Civilian Staff Officer (Class One). Balakram Kashyap was born on March 8, 1918, in Kaithu village, Shimla district of Punjab Province in British India to Kesroou Ram Kashyap, a farmer by profession. Balakram Kashyap died at the age of 84 on February 18, 2003, at Indira Gandhi Medical Hospital in Shimla. After Balakram Kashyap, Krishna Dutt Sultanpuri became the Koli Member of Parliament from the Shimla Lok Sabha constituency.
Krishna Dutt Sultanpuri became the third Koli Member of Parliament from the Shimla Lok Sabha seat. Krishna Dutt Sultanpuri won the Shimla Lok Sabha seat six times. He was a Member of Parliament from Shimla from 1980 to 1999 and was a leader of the Indian National Congress party. Krishna Dutt Sultanpuri first contested and won the election from the Solan Assembly constituency as an independent candidate in 1972, and then became a Member of Parliament. Krishna Dutt Sultanpuri was also a friend of former Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and they had known each other for a long time. Krishna Dutt Sultanpuri's son, Vinod Kumar Sultanpuri, is an MLA from the Kasauli Assembly constituency. Krishna Dutt Sultanpuri was born in Solan, Shimla district, Punjab Province, British India, to a Koli farmer family. After Krishna Dutt Sultanpuri, Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil became the Koli Member of Parliament from Shimla.
Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil became the fourth Koli Member of Parliament from the Shimla Lok Sabha seat. Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil won the Shimla Lok Sabha election in 1999 and was a leader of the Congress party. He won the Lok Sabha election again in 2004. Dhani Ram Shandil joined the Indian Army in 1962 and became a Colonel in the Dogra Regiment. He was awarded the Bharat Jyoti Award. In 1996, Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil retired from the Indian Army and entered politics. Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil was born in Shimla district, British India, to Narayanu Ram Shandil, a farmer. Currently (2025), Colonel Dhaniram Shandil is the MLA from the Solan constituency in Himachal Pradesh and serves as the Health Cabinet Minister in the Himachal Pradesh government, also holding the portfolio of Social Justice and Empowerment. Colonel Dhaniram Shandil has been a Member of Parliament from Shimla twice, first in 1999 and again in 2004. After Dhaniram Shandil, Virender Kashyap became the MP from Shimla.
Virender Kashyap became the fifth MP from the Koli community to represent the Shimla Lok Sabha constituency. Virender Kashyap served as the MP from Shimla for two consecutive terms, winning the elections in 2009 and again in 2014. Virender Kashyap is a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was born in Bhalwag, Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, into a Koli farming family. After Virender Kashyap, Suresh Kumar Kashyap became the Koli MP from Shimla.
Suresh Kumar Kashyap became the sixth MP from the Koli community to represent the Shimla Lok Sabha constituency. Suresh Kumar Kashyap is a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and won the parliamentary election for the first time in 2019, and then again for a second consecutive term in 2024, becoming the Koli MP from Shimla. Suresh Kumar Kashyap also served as the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party from July 22, 2020, to April 23, 2023. Suresh Kumar Kashyap was an officer in the Indian Air Force. He joined the Indian Air Force in 1988 and retired in 2004. Suresh Kumar Kashyap was a Non-Commissioned Officer in the Indian Air Force. Suresh Kumar Kashyap was born in Paplahan village, Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh, to Chambel Singh Kashyap, a Koli farmer.
