The Sajhedar (also spelled as SajedarSazedar and Sazhedar) is a Koli title (साझेदार) in the Indian state of Gujarat and the Union Territory Daman and Diu, Sajhedar means partner or shareholder in business or collaborative contexts.

Etymology

Etymology of "Sajhedar" (साझेदार):
The Sajhedar is derived from Hindi "साझा" (sājhā, "shared") + suffix "-दार" (-dār, "possessor"). "साझा" originates from Sanskrit "सहार्ध" (sahārdha): "सह" (saha, "with") + "अर्ध" (ardha, "half/share"), meaning joint portion. "-दार" borrowed from Persian, denoting holder. Means, "one who shares" or partner.

History

Sajhedar is a title used by Kolis of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. Sajhedar is used by Landlord Kolis or Elite Koli families whor Sajhedar (Shareholders) of Jagirs, Giras or Villages. The Koli Sajhedars used to divide the taxes collected from their Sajhedari villages equally among themselves. Sajhedar title was equal to the Elite landlords, Patel (villages headman) and Thakor.

Sajhedari Jagir or Sajhedari villges

The villages which were ruled by two or more Koli chiefs (Sajhedar) or had more than 2 Kolis as owners, rulers (Sajhedar), such villages were called Sajhedari villages. Most of Koli Sajhedars ruled their Sajhedari villgaes in Gujarat and Daman & Diu island.
