Veerangana Jhalkaribai Koli
The Jhalkaribai Koli (22 November 1830 - 1858) was an Indian woman warrior from the Koli community who served in Rani Lakshmibai's army as Commander-in-chief of Durga Dal of Jhansi state and during the 1857 Rebellion, Jhalkaribai Koli led the womens from Bundelkhand against British troops. She was born near Jhansi to Sadoba Singh Koli and Jamuna Devi, she was trained in combat and horse-riding by her father Sadoba Singh Koli. She disguised herself as the Rani to enable rani's escape from British forces, dying in battle at age 27.

Early life

Jhalkaribai Koli was born on 22 November 1830 in Bhojla village in Jhansi state to Sadoba Singh Koli (or Jamnadas Koli) and Jamuna Devi, a farmer Koli family.

She was orphaned early (mother died young, father remarried), she grew up fearless: killed a tiger/leopard as a child with an axe, learned horse-riding, archery, and combat by her father.

Jhalkaribai Koli married to Puran Singh Koli (artilleryman in Jhansi state army). She was widowed young when Puran Singh Koli died in action by British troops during 1857 rebellion.

History

Jhalkaribai Koli
Jhalkaribai Koli joined Rani Lakshmibai's Durga Dal (women's battalion) as a soldier and rose to Commander-in-chief role due to combat skills and striking. In 1858 Jhansi siege, she disguised herself as Rani Lakshmibai and led defense from the fort, deceived British forces, and enabled the real Rani's escape. She fought fiercely until captured/killed in battle (aged 27-28).
