Viro Bariyo | Virji Koli | Virji Baria | Bira Koli

The Viro Bariyo (also spelled as Virji Baria, Bira Koli, ) was the Koli Maharaja of Virpur. Virji Baria established the Virpur and founded the Baria Koli dynasty. Virpur was named after Koli king Virji Baria. Even today, Kolis of the Baria clan (Baria Koli, Bariya Koli, Baraiya Koli) (Gotra, Kutumb) are found in large numbers in Gujarat.

According to historians, Virji Baria wanted to marry the daughter of a Brahmin in his kingdom. While the Brahmin agreed, but the Brahmin community opposed this and rebuked him for giving his daughter to a non-Brahmin for the sake of wealth. Following this, the Brahmins conspired against the Koli king and sought help from Virbhadra, a dacoit. It was decided that the Brahmin would agree to the marriage and set a date for the wedding. When the Kolis arrived for the feast, they were to be plied with alcohol, so much so that the Koli Maharaja and his officials would be unable to do anything. Then, on that day, Veerbhadra, along with his bandit companions, would ambush the Kolis and attack them. This plan succeeded. Veerbhadra attacked the Kolis, treacherously defeated them, and with the blessings of the Avichal Mata of Veerpur, he took over Veerpur and became its ruler.

वीरजी बारिया वीरपुर के कोली महाराज थे। वीरजी बारिया ने ही वीरपुर को बसाया था और वीरपुर के बारिया कोली राजवंश की स्थापना की। कोली वीरजी बारिया के नाम पर ही वीरपुर का नाम पड़ा था। आज के समय भी गुजरात में बारिया गोत्र (कुटुंब, कुल) के कोली बहुत पाए जाते हैं।

इतिहासकारों के अनुसार, वीरजी बारिया अपने राज्य के एक ब्राह्मण की पुत्री से विवाह करना चाहते थे। लेकिन ब्राह्मण तो राजी हो गया था लेकिन ब्राह्मण समाज ने इस बात का विरोध किया और ब्राह्मण को धिक्कारा की धन के लालच में तू अपनी बेटी को एक गैर ब्राह्मण को दे रहा है। जिसके बाद ब्राह्मणों ने कोली के विरुद्ध साजिश रची और एक लुटेरे वीरभद्र से सहायता मांगी और यह तय हुआ कि ब्राह्मण इस विवाह के लिए सहमत हो जाए और विवाह के लिए एक दिन निश्चित कर दे। जब कोली दावत के लिए आए तो उन्हें दावत मै शराब पिला दी जाए और शराब इतनी पिलाई जाए कि कोली महाराजा और उनके अधिकारी कुछ भी करने की स्थिति में न रहे फिर इसके बाद उस दिन वीरभद्र अपने लुटेरे साथियों के साथ घात लगाकर कोलियों पर आक्रमण कर देगा। यह योजना सफल हुई। वीरभद्र ने कोलियों पर आक्रमण किया, उन्हें धोखे से बुरी तरह से पराजित किया और वीरपुर में अविचल माता का आशीर्वाद लेके वीरपुर पर कब्जा करके वहां का राज बन गया।
