Just days after India gained independence in 1947, a revolutionary named Nana Farari (Nanasaheb Koli) cut off the noses and ears of moneylenders, traders from the Baniya, Teli, and Parsi castes.

Nana Farari Koli

Nana Farari was a Koli revolutionary from Bombay State, at that time, Maharashtra and Gujarat were united and known as Bombay Province. He fought against British rule in India during the Indian Independence Movement from 1945 to 1947. He became famous as Nana Farari because, along with his revolutionary comrades, he would attack British police stations, offices, and sycophants (who were British allies) and escape. His real name was Nanasaheb Koli. Nana Farari was born into a Koli farming family in Maharashtra, and even today, stories of Nana Farari can be heard in the towns of Dharampur, Surgana, and Peth in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Nana Farari: Koli dacoit and freedom fighter

Nana Farari actively participated in the Indian independence movement, but even after India's independence in 1947, he continued his rebellion. As the Britishers were leaving India, Nana Farari took up arms against hoarding and moneylenders, who often usurped the land of poor farmers by lending them money, and demanded high interest by overstating the amount owed on their papers. In October 1947, Nana Farari cut off the noses and ears of members of the trading communities, such as the Bania, Parsi, and Teli, and burned the moneylender's transaction papers, prompting the Bania, moneylender, Teli, and Parsi people of the surrounding area to flee their homes.

When the news of cutting off the nose and ears by the revolutionary Nana Farari spread, the then Prime Minister (Head of Government) of Bombay Province Balasaheb Gangadhar Kher stripped Nana Farari of his revolutionary status and declared him a dacoit (Thug) and issued an order to shoot him at sight. After this, for several months the Bombay State Police (Bombay State forces) kept searching for Nana Farari in Nashik and Trimbak to catch him and one day Nana Farari and his companions fought a face to face battle with the Bombay State Forces in a village called Toragaon and in this encounter Nana Farari and his close companion Kalia Koli were killed.

1947 में भारत देश आजाद होने के कुछ दिन बाद ही नाना फरारी (नानासाहेब कोली) नाम के क्रांतिकारी ने साहूकार, बनिया, तेली और पारसी जाति के व्यापारियों की नाक और कान काट दिए थे।

नाना फरारी, बॉम्बे राज्य में एक कोली क्रांतिकारी थे, उस समय महाराष्ट्र और गुजरात एक हुआ करते थे और बॉम्बे प्रोविंस के नाम से जाने जाते थे। नाना फरारी ने 1945 से 1947 तक भारतीय स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन के दौरान भारत में ब्रिटिश शासन के खिलाफ लड़ाई लड़ी थी। नाना फरारी अपने क्रांतिकारी साथियों के साथ मिलकर ब्रिटिश थाने, तफ़्तरों एवं चाटुकारों (जो अंग्रेजों के साथ थे) पर हमला करके फरार हो जाते थे इसलिए वह नाना फरारी के नाम से मशहूर हो गया था वैसे उसका असली नाम नानासाहेब कोली था। नाना फरारी का जन्म महाराष्ट्र के एक किसान कोली परिवार में हुआ था और आज भी नाना फरारी की कहानियां महाराष्ट्र और गुजरात के धरमपुर, सुरगाना और पेठ कस्बों में सुनी जा सकती हैं।

नाना फरारी ने भारतीय स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन में सक्रिय रूप से भाग लिया था लेकिन 1947 में भारत की स्वतंत्रता के बाद भी, नाना फरारी ने अपना विद्रोह जारी रखा। अब अंग्रेज तो भारत से जा रहे थे तो नाना फरारी ने जमाखोरी और मालसाजी साहूकारों और साहूकारों के खिलाफ हथियार उठा लिए क्योंकि साहूकार लोग अक्सर गरीब किसानों को कर्ज देकर उनकी जमीनों को हड़प लेते थे, और अपने कागजों में उधारी का ज्यादा पैसा लिखकर ज्यादा ब्याज मांगते थे, जिसके कारण अक्टूबर 1947 में नाना फरारी ने बनिया, पारसी और तेली जैसे व्यापारिक समुदायों के लोगों के नाक और कान काट दिए थे और साहूकारों से लेनदेन के कागजों को जला दिया था जिसके बाद आसपास के इलाकों के बनिया, साहूकार, तेली और पारसी लोग घरों को छोड़कर भाग गए।

जब क्रांतिकारी नाना फरारी के द्वारा नाक और कान काटने की खबर फैली तो उस समय के बॉम्बे प्रोविंस के प्रधान मंत्री (हेड ऑफ गवर्मेंट) बालासाहेब गंगाधर खेर ने नाना फरारी से क्रांतिकारी का दर्जा छीनते हुए नाना फरारी को डकैत (डाकू) घोषित कर दिया और शूट ऐट साइट का आदेश जारी कर दिया। इसके बाद कई महीनों तक बॉम्बे राज्य पुलिस (Bombay state forces) नाना फरारी को पकड़ने के लिए नासिक और त्रिम्बक में नाना फरारी की तलाश करती रही और एक दिन नाना फरारी और उसके साथियों ने तोरागाँव नामक गाँव में बॉम्बे स्टेट फोर्सेज के साथ आमने सामने की लड़ाई लड़ी और इस मुठभेड़ में नाना फरारी और उसका करीबी साथी कालिया कोली मारा गया।
