In 1763 - 1764, when Kolis of Chivhe gotra (clan, kutumb) defeated the Marathas and captured Purandar Fort, Sinhagad Fort, Rudramal Fort and also took the Prime Minister of Maratha Empire Peshwa Raghunathrao captive.
In the end of 1763, Peshwa Raghunathrao appointed Pandit Abha Purandare as Sarnaik but there was a rift between Abha Purandare and Koli forfkeepers and Koli subedars. Due to which Chivhe Kolis took up arms against Peshwa and revolted. Peshwa Raghunathrao sent Maratha army to crush the Koli rebellion but Kolis under the leadership of Koli Sardar Kondaji Chivhe defeated the Maratha army and captured Purandar and Sinhagad forts. Seeing the audacity of the Kolis, Abha Purandare removed other Kolis from the fort and posted new fort commanders, due to which the Kolis once again attacked and captured the forts on 7 May 1764. Five days later, the Kolis also captured the Rudramal fort and presented a challenge to the Prime Minister of the Maratha Empire, Peshwa Raghunathrao. A few days later, the Peshwa came to the Purandar fort to worship his Kuldevta, but as soon as he came inside, the Kolis captured the Peshwa and the Maratha military officers and held them captive. The Kolis looted all the goods and weapons of the Peshwa, but after a week the Kolis took pity on the Peshwa and released him. After this, the Kolis' Sardar Kondaji Chivhe sent a letter to the Peshwa, in which it was written 'Now what Maharaj, how are you, how is the government running, have fun'. After reading this letter, the Peshwa felt more humiliated and in anger, he once again ordered the Maratha army to attack with more Marathas but the army could not do anything because the Kolis themselves were experienced and famous Subedars and Fort Commanders and they had fortified Purandar, Sinhagad and Rudramal forts well and the Peshwa Marathas had to face failure. The humiliated Peshwa, out of humiliation, declared in the Maratha Empire that the Kolis of Chivhe gotra should be captured and imprisoned. All the Chivhe Kolis living in the Peshwa's area were declared rebels and started being imprisoned. After this, Chivhe Kolis sent a letter to Madhavrao and told him the whole story. Madhavrao assured him that if Kolis return the three forts (Purandar fort, Sinhagad fort, Rudramal fort) to the Maratha Empire, then Kolis will be returned their fort status, subedari and state honors, after which Kolis handed over the forts to Madhavrao.
